Liz MacMullin
Owner & Director, Serious Fun Childcare Inc.
What are you most proud of professionally? And who or why?
I am unbelievably proud and privileged to be a part of a team of professionals providing the highest standard of inclusive childcare possible. My colleagues are passionate, loving, patient and dedicated, and it shows every day.
What's your vision for Atlantic Canada in 10 years? What’s our biggest opportunity now?
I would like to see children with exceptionalities accepted in classrooms all over, supported by trained individuals, and given equal opportunity to thrive and grow. I would like to see Inclusion become a non-issue. If a child needs supports, develop a plan, draw on resources as necessary and move on. Simple as that.
What's your deepest learning from this past year? How did/will you apply it?
Shaking the guilt many women feel when they choose their family over their career - or vice versa. What needs to be priority #1 can change from one day to the next, and women are criticized either way. I have learned the importance of letting go and taking care of myself as a way to take care of everything else.
How have you recovered from fractured professional relationships? What uncomfortable truths have you learned about yourself in those experiences?
Everyone needs to do what is right for themselves and their family. As an employer, you may suffer the consequences and be left to pick up the pieces, especially when children are involved. I have learned to respect everyone’s journey, and understand that I may be a stepping stone on their path.
