What are you most proud of professionally? And who or why?
I’m proud of the relationships I’ve built and truly appreciate the opportunities I’ve been given to make those connections.
What’s your vision for Atlantic Canada in 10 years?
An Atlantic Canada with equal opportunities, thriving business, barrier-free collaborations, and real living wages.
What was your greatest stage of growth? What made it a shift for you?
2019 blessed me, shocked and awed me, and transformed my entire world in ways I hadn't even considered. Growth was required for survival in a lot of ways - and because of that, I've never been a more whole person. In professional roles alone, going from private sector work where one's entire focus is increasing sales - to the non-profit world where you have the privilege of helping others make incredible changes in community that you can actually see and feel; the shift is immeasurable. It's something you can't, and don't want to, come back from.
What’s your favourite or most read book or podcast? Now or at each of your greatest stages of growth?
Reading has always been an escape for me, so I have never considered it a contribution to my growth. However, a brilliant colleague and friend of mine gifted me with my current read, Bad Feminist, by Roxane Gay - and it might be a game changer.
What’s your deepest learning from this past year? How did/will you apply it?
You won't always get it the first time. You won't always get it, period. And it's okay to acknowledge your own challenges, find new ways to learn, and give yourself a break. Accepting that it's okay to be vulnerable, and taking time to adapt, is my new softer shadow.
Who’s inspired you, directly or indirectly? How have they inspired you?
There is a handsome, brown eyed 4-year old boy who inspires me to be my best everyday. But, outside of this important mama role - my position with Inspiring Communities has connected me with the most wonderful, genuine, and clever folks. It's nearly impossible to not feel inspired when you're surrounded by people who motivate, accept, and create a safe atmosphere for growth both professionally and personally. It’s not something to take for granted.
What would you have done differently?
It took me a long time to learn that the risk could be worth it. It's so easy to set limitations for yourself. I like to think if I had the courage to embrace myself years ago, I would have accomplished more - but then, that was a different person still. So perhaps, everything played out exactly as it should have. And, I’m not going to question that.
